KRISLUND CAMP |
|||
Camping in Christ's LandHousing is based on the grade level the campers have finished.
Dates for camp begin in the middle of June and run through the middle of August. Check in begins on a Sunday afternoon and the camp ends on the following Saturday at 10:15 a.m. Krislund also offers 3 day mini-camps for children in grades K - 3, family camps, and off-site adventure camps. The camp is located 23 miles East of State College, PA near exit #173 on I-80. Krislund is a camp of the Presbyterian Church (USA) that is supported by the 150 churches in the Presbyteries of Carlisle, Huntingdon, and Northumberland. It has recently added 1,500 acres to make a total area of over 2,000 acres. The program is run by a 6 member leadership team, lead by Steve Cort, that oversees a staff of 45 persons. There is a camper / counselor ratio of about 5 to 1. Each unit has a college age senior counselor and a post-high school junior counselor. RECENT ADDITIONS TO KRISLUND
In 2002 - 2003 the Presbyteries approved loans for the purchase of 1,500 acres of land adjoining the camp. The purchase of the land ensures that no housing developments, animal farms, or mining operations will be constructed near the camp. It also opens a variety of new ministries for the camp. Some suggestions include a fully self-sufficient environmental stewardship center, cabins and lodges for individual and church use, a rustic center, and even cross country skiing trails. This also provides more land for nature hikes for the campers. Money to pay back the loans will come from the sale of a few parcels of land, the sale of property for the lodges and cabins, and the Donate an Acre program. This last program allows individuals to donate an acre for $800.00 in memory of a loved one. Plaques bearing the memorials will be displayed in the newly renovated Retreat Center.
Krislund now has a campaign to raise $120,000.00 to remodel the Retreat Center. The Retreat Center serves as the main meeting room and dining area for the camp. It was built in 1970 and has not been updated since. The remodeling includes a fully renovated kitchen, an apartment for the cook, an expanded indoor dining area to serve 200 people, repairs to the basement so that it may be used for staff and small group meetings, the addition of a 40 x 40 meeting space for 150 people, upgrading the bathrooms, and making the main floor fully accessible. As you can see by the pictures, some of the work has already been completed. The project should be finished by the Spring of 2004. Lost Creek Presbyterian Church has committed itself to supporting the ministry of Krislund Camp by donating $200.00 a year for general expenses and also donating $500.00 over the next 3 years for special projects like the Retreat Center.
