VBS - 2003

This year's theme for Vacation Bible School was Group Publishing's "Super Cool Undersea Bible Adventure." SCUBA for short. The Bible Story for each night had something to do with water. The first night was Elijah calling fire down from heaven which burned up the water Elijah had put over his altar. The point of the story was to teach children to, "Believe in God." The next night was the story of Jonah which taught children to, "Obey God." The children entered into the belly of the fish to hear this story (shown at left). The third night was the story of Jesus walking on the water which taught children to, "Trust God." The fourth night was the story of Jesus' death and resurrection which taught children to, "Love God." While this story does not involve water directly, our baptism is a symbol of our dying and rising with Christ. The last night was the story of the resurrection appearance of Jesus while the disciples were fishing. It taught the children to, "Share God's Love."
The children were divided into groups that contained all ages. Leaders took their groups to different stations where the key point for each night was reinforced in each activity. They watched a video about Chadder Chipmunk who solved the mystery of the Coral Reef Thief while learning to scuba dive. They dove deeper into the Bible story by re-enacting the story. They made crafts and even snacks related to each night's theme. And their play time used games that reinforced the Bible point. Each night opened and closed with music and a visit from Scuba Doo (shown at right).
The Mission project this year supported, "Shoes for Orphaned Souls," which seeks to provide shoes and socks for children around the world. Children and parents brought shoes and socks each night or donated money to help pay shipping cost. Larry Booker, owner of the McAlisterville Shoe Store, donated a large number of shoes.
The program was held at Trinity Lutheran Church and was supported by the budgets and donations of members from both churches. This year Patti Strawser, a member of Lost Creek Presbyterian Church, was the director. She had help from members of both churches, and both pastors helped out throughout the week. We also want to thank Brown's United Methodist Church for donating many of the decorations they used when they offered the SCUBA program earlier in the summer.

Jean Barnard lead the singing for the opening and closing of VBS each night

The kids learned motions and sign language to go along with each song.

Every room in the church was decorated with an underwater theme.

Children decorated mesh bags to hold their Verse Buddies as one of their crafts.

Children made and then ate snacks related to each night's theme.

We had wonderful weather each night and the kids had fun playing outside.

The "Great Fish" was made of long sheets of landscaping plastic taped to the floor on all sides. An entrance was cut on one end, and a box fan filled the "fish" with air at the other end.

Once in the fish, Clarice Pellman told the story of Jonah. . .

while her assistant Dewy Aldinger provided sound effects on the outside.

Angela Fowler created a number of "fishy" decorations, including this whale that seems to have swallowed some of our pre-schoolers.
